Tunis Vanderveer, a son of Dominicus Vanderveer, was born about 1704. His mother was Maria Margaretha Van Nortlych. Tunis married about 1723, Aeltie, daughter of Gerret Roelofse Schench and his wife Nelltje G. Van Vorrhees. Most of the Vanderveers living in and about Monmouth county, New Jersey, are descendants of this couple. Among the descendants is the late Garret A. Hobart, the vice-president of William McKinley. He was sworn in at noon March 4, 1897. He died before McKinley was shot or he would have been president.
The farm of Tunis Vancerveer lay in Monmouth county between Old Tennent church and Marlboro about three or four miles from Freehold, New Jersey. It formed a portion of the battlefield of Monmouth. All the buildings were burned by the British, and on the return of the family, which had taken refuge in the left wing of Washington's army, only a cat and a pair of fowls could be found.
