An article in the Lawrence newspaper on 26 June, 1998:
A $50,000 gift to the Lawrence Schools Foundation will be used to fund a third Early Childhood Readiness classroom for the at-risk preschoolers in the Lawrence school district. Lawrence resident William Dann made the contribution in honor of Gertrude Ruttan, former Latin and English teacher in Lawrence public schools. “Because I have heard so many years from different students of hers, I have developed a great respect for her,” Dann said. “Such a splendid teacher should receive additional recognition. I’m glad to be able to honor her in this way.”
Ruttan retired from teaching in 1969 and lives in Presbyterian Manor. At 94 she is unable to see as many visitors as she once did, but told friends she was touched by Dann’s contribution. Plans are under way for the classroom to be added at East Heights and dedicated in honor of Ruttan in late September.
