Cemetery data lists his birth as 14 April 1820, and his father as Henry.

Dr. Henry Ruttan, was french and of a prominent family, and was a first cousin to the famous Empress Eugenie, widow of the late French monarch(sic). Doctor Ruttan was born in Canada, later came to the United States and located in Virginia, but died at Leavenworth, Kansas, in 1882, at the age of sixty-four. For many years he practiced his profession. He married Jane Kirkpatrick, of Scotch descent, connected with the Royal Clan of Kirkpatrick.
Listed in 1850 census of Elmira, Chemung Co, New York as Henry T. Rutan, a shoemaker. Listed with him is his wife Jane (40, NC), Wm W. (6), Marion (3), Henry (1) and a boarder (shoemaker) named W. H. Morgan.
Listed in 1860 as H. T. Rutan (40), a shoemaker born in Canada. He is with his wife Jane (45, NC), William W. (16), Marion (14), Emma?(11), and Ervin (8).
Listed in Barton Twp, Tioga Co with his wife and 4 children in 1865. They were living in the house of James Partridge.
A physician, as was his father; according to a family history.
He is listed as Henry T. Ruttan in the 1870 census for Susqehannah Co, PA as a physician (49) with $500 of land; with his wife Jane (50, NC), son Henry (21) a wagon maker, daughter Marion (24) a tailoress, and son Edwin (18) a farm laborer.
His brother Jacob thought he was living in Waverly (NY) in 1871.
Listed with the family of his daughter Marion in 1880, as age 68, a physician surgeon with his name as H. T. Rutton. His wife was not listed with him and he is listed as widowed.
Died at age 62 yrs, 11 mos, 4 days according to a family record. Died of pneumonia. Was living at 787 Seneca St, Leavenworth at the time. Cemetery records list him as Dr. H. T. Ruttan.

The letter obtained from Frances Ruttan Sandusky via Frances Sandusky Poynter and Frances Ruttan Holland was apparently written by Jane herself. It details the Kirkpatrick family history. She is a Kirkpatrick of Kircudbright, Scotland. Eldest daughter of William C. and Eliza A. (Robertson) Kirkpatrick.
“I, Jean Watson Kirkpatrick born in 1810. Father died 1814. Mother moved to Fayetteville, NC 1815, died there Mar 1st 1825. In Oct 1825 I went to Norwich, Conn. was living with my half-sister and her husband at this time. In 1826 went to Great Bennington, Mass. 1827 went to Schenectedy N.Y. and from there to Ithaca where I lived 5 years. Moved to Elmira and then to Utica, New York state. Lived there ‘til 1835, then to Ithaca where I remained ‘til 1844. I was married in 1842, since then spent one year in Canada, the rest of the time in New York state ‘til I came to Iowa.”

She is listed with her entire family in the 1870 census for Susqehannah Co, PA.
Listed as Mrs. Jane W. Ruttan, widow at 766 Seneca, Leavenworth in the 1885 city directory, and also listed in the state census that year with her son Edwin and his wife.
Died at age 75 yrs, 3 mos according to written family record. Was living at 503 5th St, Leavenworth at the time of her death. Died of Dropsy.
