Misc. Notes
He was a farmer, his name was listed as Merrit Hines. Came from Mass. in 1811 to PA, and to Hines Corners in 1831.
His father, David Hines, was listed with them in the 1850 census (age 87). He is listed as 57, with Catherine (55), Philander (27), David J. (16), Elizabeth (20), and Alvira (18).
In 1860 he is listed as 65, born in Conn. and a farmer with $1,500/$400. Living with he and his wife are Mary (15) and Eveline (13) - are these later children or grandchildren by which son?
Listed as just he and his wife in 1870 census, a farmer age 78 with $2,000 of land and $400 personal property who was born in Conn. Aged 88 years 9 months and 15 days according to his headstone. He is buried with his wife, Catherine. It is actually an obelisk; one side has Merritt Hine; another side has Merritt's wife, Catherine; a third side has David Hine and his wife Jane; the fourth side is very rough that I think once showed a design. The cemetery is located off of Rte. 370; north 1/2 mile on Oxbow Road. There is a bronze plaque on a stone marker: "Erected in honor of David and Merritt Hine. First settlers of Hines Corners, year 1811. By their descendants, Aug. 9, 1925." At the marker, turn right onto Clark Road. Cemetery is 1/4 mile on the left, directly opposite the Independent Lake Camp.
