Misc. Notes
He was in poor health since 1865, when at Pit Hole City, PA he came near death of malignant fever, and was saved only by the faithful ministrations of his brother Edwin. Dr. Sugart, the only physician of ability in that section was treating him and contracted the dread disease, and on his way, hurrying home to die, called and left an abundant supply of medicines, and bade the five patients in the Tallman residence a final "Good Bye", saying that himself must die, and very soon. The doctor was buried on the third day thereafter.
The five survived, and one by one were sent to Tallmanville by rail. The funds were exhausted, so Edwin E. and his faithful wife, Mary J. Van Horne, with a two year old child, and driving a feeble old team hitched to a dilapidated spring wagon, started for home in Wayne Co. on 11 Dec 1865. In the cold, and through deep drifts of snow, they made their way nearly 400 miles, and arrived on 22 Dec, after the death of his devoted wife on 21 Dec 1865.
Listed in the 1880 census for Preston Twp, Wayne Co, PA. They had only Winnie, Sidney and Harry listed, as Clark had died before that time.
He lived in Tallmanville until 1885, when he moved his family to Longmont, Colorado, hoping in its sunny climate to regain his broken health. Before his death, he was the Mayor of North Longmont City, Colorado.
Listed in Longmont in 1900 at age 53, as a day laborer with his wife Julia (51, PA) of 32 yrs, but only 5 of their 8 children surviving. Living at home were Mamie (12) and Christopher (9). His son Sidney & family were living next to him.
Darwin suffered from a complication of diseases, which finally terminated in a fatal weakness of the heart. He left 5 children: Harry and Sidney Tallman of Longmont, Winfield B. Tallman of Denver, Mamie and Christopher P. Tallman who were still living at home.
