Son of John Akin and Hannah Sherman. He and his brother James, his partner, owned a shipyard, a ship, and several houses in New Bedford at the time of the raid by the English. All of which, together with his home, were burned by the British. Late in life, he married a second wife, Ruth Wilcox on 12 April 1790 and had his youngest son Joseph.
Listed in 1790 Dartmouth census with 3 males >16, 3 males < 16, and 4 females.
NOTE - Tallman tradition has associated this event with their ancestor William or Brittain.
(from New International Cyclopedia, section on New Bedford, Massachusetts)
“During the Revolution, New Bedford sent out many Privateers, and because of its convenient location, became the storehouse of many captured prizes.
In retaliation for the damage done by the Privateers of New Bedford, on September 5, 1778, an English fleet of thirty-two vessels, and an army under Gen. Grey, attacked the town and reduced the greater part of it to ashes, the amount of damage was more than $450,000.”

Burial location has not been proven but it can be assumed that he was probably buried in the family cemetery
