2nd Lieut, Co. F of 45th Regiment of PA Volunteer Infantry (GAR Post 150 sign at headstone). His right elbow was shot off at the battle of Petersburg on 30 July in the Civil War. He had bones excised, as shown in the full picture of him from the National Museum of Health and Medicine. His brother Cyrenus served in the 4th NY Artillery and was also at Petersburg. The siege lasted for 9 months. The 45th fought in the battles of South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Vicksburg, Knoxville, Cumberland Gap, Spotsylvania, Wilderness, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg. Adolphus was also wounded in Jackson, MS.
His family moved from Wayne Co, PA to Hancock, NY where they are listed in the 1900 census, when Adolphus is shown as being born in Feb 1840.
