Mrs. Edithe Colwell Bateman. DAR ID Number: 79839. Born in Iowa City, Iowa. Wife of St. Elmo Bateman. Descendant of Solomon Fenton and of William Boyd. Daughter of Charles F. Colwell (b. 1835) and Jennie M. Fenton (b. 1840), his wife, m. 1857. Granddaughter of Alford Colwell (b. 1787) and Nancy Boyd Thomas (1798-1873), his wife, m. 1818; Horace Fenton (1805--78) and Olive Johnson (1810-77), his wife, m. 1829. Gr-granddaughter of Solomon Fenton and Molly Parker (1778-1853), his wife; John Thomas (d. 1802) and Easter Boyd (b. 1761), his wife, m. 1794. Gr-gr-granddaughter of William Boyd and Sarah Johnson, his wife, m. 1757. Solomon Fenton (1758-1843) was placed on the pension roll of Tolland County, Conn., 1833, for service as private, Connecticut Continental Line. He was born in Willington Hill; died in Westerly, Conn. William Boyd (1731-1821) signed the oath of allegiance in Delaware, 1778. He was born in Ireland; died in Waterford, Pa.

Listed as Edith E. Colwell (5, IA) in the 1880 census. A picture of her with her (2nd) cousin Mabel Fenton is noted as being taken about 1891 in Sigourney, which is in Keokuk Co, IA. She married Elmo Bateman, according to Sue Rogers, and they are listed in the 1900 census for Waterloo, IA as being married only 5 months. It also lists her birth as being Sept 1874 and shows her as being 25.
They are listed in Los Angeles in the 1920 census, and her father is living with them, along with St. Elmo’s mother.
In 1930 she is listed (55, OH) as married and a voice teacher, but is living with her brothers William and Arthur plus sister-in-law M. Jessie Colwell.

He was living with his mother and aunt in the 1880 census, at age 3, indicating his birth in 1876.
In the 1900 census, where he is listed as Elmer, his birth is recorded as being Nov 1877, and that they had been married only 5 months.
In 1918, when he registered for the WWI Draft, he was living in Sioux City, Woodbury Co, IA and working as an alfalfa salesman. At that time, he listed his birth as 1876.
He is listed alone and divorced in the 1930 census at the Pan Hotel in Los Angeles, as a salesman of building materials.
