Thelma Varcoe Tallman, age 82 of Honesdale passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 22, surrounded by her family. She was the widow of Raymond R. Tallman who died in 2000.
A lifelong resident of Honesdale, she was the daughter of the late Nelson Varcoe and Florence Colwell Varcoe. She graduated from East Stroudsburg State College in 1948 and was a gifted, loving teacher dedicated to her students until her retirement in 1990. Over the years she received many awards for her hard work and dedication. Among them were the Outstanding Educator Award and the Anne Sullivan Award. However no award ever gave her more pleasure or pride than the simple note or card she often received from a former student sharing their accomplishments or just saying hello. Thelma was a longstanding member of the Honesdale Central United Methodist Church and its women's society. She volunteered many years with the Red Cross, Wayne County Public Library, American Cancer Society and the Food Pantry.
Her love and devotion to her family and friends was unsurpassed. Thelma is survived by one son, Gerald Tallman and wife Ann of Honesdale; two daughters; Sandra Maculaitis and husband Joe of Paupack, Janice Tanner and husband Jim of Carlisle; one sister, Melva Hicks of Honesdale; eight grandchildren, Chris and Eric Tallman, Michelle Iloff, Scott Mang, Andrea Nakielny, Erin Maculaitis, Traci Kelley and Nicole Maschmeyer.
