MANSFIELD ~ After attending Johnsville High School, Mary E. Wells left her family's farm in the dust and headed for the excitement of the big city of Mansfield. It was the early 1940s, and like many women, Mary went to work in a factory to help support the war effort of WWII.
She began at Westinghouse in 1943, making engine parts for airplanes. After WWII, Westinghouse converted to manufacturing household appliances, and Mary worked on the range and dryer lines until she retired in 1984 ~ completing 40 years of service.
A real-life Rosie-the-Riveter, Mary passed away peacefully Saturday morning August 22, 2009 from Mansfield Memorial Homes. She was 87.
Born October 22, 1921, on her family's Lost Run Road farm near Fredericktown, Mary was the seventh of 11 children born to Clarence and Edna (Irwin) Wells, and was raised there at Fredericktown.
She never lost her love for the outdoors. Mary enjoyed gardening and tending to her many flowers, she just loved to have her hands in the soil.
Mary also loved animals, and helping others ~ she was always there to lend a hand when anyone needed help.
She was a member of Perry Church of Christ, and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Mary is survived by sisters and a brother-in-law Ruby Cathers, Barbara French and Rebecca & Richard Chronister all of Mansfield, and Marjorie Keckler of Galion; nephews and nieces Gerald & Velma Wells of Mount Vernon, Sue & Tom Miller of Howard, Cheryl & Harry Rhodes of Raleigh, NC, Cynthia French of Mansfield and David & Kim Chronister of Lexington; and numerous great nieces, great nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers and a sister-in-law Harold Wells, Leland Wells, John & Mary Lillian Wells, Marion Wells and Warren Wells; and brothers-in-law Fred Cathers and Arthur Keckler.
