Listed as farmer with his father in 1850 in Jefferson Twp, age 31 farmer. In May 1855 he purchased 160 Ac in Lucas Co, IA.
He is living with his wife, mother, and sister in 1860, in Jefferson Twp.
Living in Jefferson Twp, Fayette Co, PA in 1870, farmer with $14,760 land, $2,208 prop. His son, dau and mother were living with them. In company with his brother John and with "California" J. Morris, William had gone to California as a forty-niner, but was shipwrecked on the voyage, and after reaching the Pacific Coast was called home on account of his mother's death and then took charge of the homestead farm.
By 1880 they had moved to Morgantown WV, where he is listed as a farmer (60) with his wife, son and two daughters. On moving to Monongalia County he bought the old DeMain farm, later included in South Park. He died July 12, 1896, at the age of seventy-six. His wife died April 20, 1916, at the age of seventy-three. He was one of the extensive sheep growers of the section.
