Listed as a School Teacher in 1860 census with his wife and a son Thomas L. Nutt (1), who is not listed later and must have died as an infant. Also listed is Mary Nutt (26), probably a sister. He was an 1861 graduate of Allegheny College in Meadville, PA and from 1861 until Dec 1865 he served in the Union Army, rising from private to captain.
