Birth record listed as J. W. Wells, then as Joseph Wells in 1900 and 1910 census, and as Joseph J. Wells on his WWI Draft registration.
Listed as a boarder with his sister’s Dilley family in Byesville in 1910, age 19 and working in a coal mine.
He then married Jennie B. Dilley in 1913 at Ohio Co, WV.
He registered for the WWI draft in June 1917 as Joseph J. Wells; he was in Chicago and working as a clerk for the Wabash railroad, and married.
He was a Corporal (service# 266059) in the SEC 4 GR "A" MTC, RO 328 unit and returned from France to Brooklyn on 11 Sep 1919.
They apparently divorced, as she was listed with her parents in 1920 and was remarried in 1923.

Jennie Secrest Called By Death
CAMBRIDGE-Mrs. Jennie B. Secrest, 52, wife of 0. Stokeley Secrest died at the home on Steubenville avenue after a year's illness. Born in Byesville, she was a daughter of the late William and Jennie Ray Dilley and had been la resident of Cambridge many years. Surviving in addition to her husband, are one sitser, Mrs. Velma Culhan of Zanesville, one brother, Robert P. Dilley of Marion, Ind., and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 1:30 p. m., in Scott funeral home. Mrs. Margaret A. Smith Christian Science reader of Zanesville, will be in charge. Burial will be made in Northwood cemetery. The body was returned to the late home Saturday to remain there until time for services.
