[Obituary] Bakersfield Californian - 12 July 2012
Robert Eugene "Bob" Holland Robert E. Holland passed away suddenly July 8, 2012. Funeral Services will be held Friday, July 13, 2012 at 10AM at Riverlakes Community Church, 4301 Calloway Drive, with graveside services immediately following at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 9101 Kern Canyon Road. A reception will immediately follow the graveside at the Bakersfield Masonic Temple, 1920 18th Street in Bakersfield. He is survived by his devoted wife, Sandra; sons, John and Joel; daughter and son-in-law, Janine and Joshua Clements; granddaughters, Paige and Abby Clements; brother, Craig and wife, Carole; brother Russell and wife, Kim, and loving mother, Frances Lorraine Holland. He also leaves behind a multitude of friends and loved ones that were deeply meaningful to him. Robert was born in Bakersfield to Frances and Eugene Holland on May 24, 1946. Robert attended local schools and was proudly a BHS Class of 1964 graduate. "Once a Driller, Always a Driller" was his belief and remained an active member of his class, often volunteering to organize reunions. It was at BHS that he met the love of his life, Sandra, whom he married in September of 1970. He was a graduate of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo's Class of 1970 where he majored in Business Administration. Robert worked in sales for several years, but returned to his true love of heavy equipment operating, most recently working for Valley Tree and Construction. Recently, Robert extended his education by pursuing his interest in auctioneering, which he adored. If one was lucky enough to call Robert a friend, they had a friend in the truest sense. Loyal and caring, Robert would often call to check in on loved ones and catch up. Robert was always willing to lend a hand to a friend in need and always welcomed friends and family with his booming voice and powerful handshake. He was a man of his word and believed in the power of honesty, integrity, justice, and God. He read avidly, especially the Bible and the works of Zane Grey. He was an accomplished gardener that enjoyed the park-like setting of his yard and worked diligently to keep it as such. He loved animals and always had a soft spot for strays, often bragging about how any animal that was lucky enough to find his family had found a good home. Robert served his community as a Freemason for 40 years where he was an extremely active Master Mason with the Meudell-Oildale Lodge. He also volunteered for the American Cancer Society, American Lung Association, American Heart Association and Relay for Life. Robert believed in the work of the Shriners Childrens Hospitals and donations in his name can be sent to the Bakersfield Masonic Temple, 1920 18th Street, Bakersfield, CA 93301.
