Benjamin Griggs, son of John and Elizabeth Griggs, was born about 1690 at Gravesend, Long Island, removed with his brothers to the Millstone River, NJ, and built a grist mill before 1733; and for them the town of Griggstown was named. The Griggs family wer resident of the Eastern Precinct (later known as Franklin Township), in Somerset County, where Benjamin was taxed on four acres and a mill in 1735.
