Married Alice J. Rittenhouse (1854-1914) on October 19, 1876 and lived in Franklin Twp. Listed in 1880 census for Franklin Twp with his wife Alice (25 PA) and son Clyde Wells Downs (1). They had two children. Living in Connellsville in 1908 at time of mother's death.

J. Allen Downs, 83 years, 11 months, resident of Connellsville for the last 32 year, died at 4:00 Friday morning in the home of his son and daughter-in-law Mr. and Mrs. William B. Downs, 314 South Eighth Street, this city, following a year’s illness. He was born March 12, 1863, the son of the late William B. and Rebecca Wells Downs. During his early years, he resided on farms near Smock and Flatwoods. Thirty-two years ago he established his residence in Connellsville. Mrs. Alice J. Rittenhouse Downs, of near Flatwoods, whom he wed October 19, 1876 died April 1, 1914. His second wife, Mrs. Mary Burton Downs of Liberty also preceded him in death. Surviving are two sons, Clyde W. and William B. Downs of Connellsville; and one sister, Mrs. James P. Reed, Uniontown; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 Sunday afternoon in the Downs residence. Burial will be in Hill Grove Cemetery, Connellsville.
