In the name of God amen. I David Hess of Berlin Township, County of Knox and State of Ohio being of sound mind, memory and understanding, do consider the uncertainty of life and the certainty of death feel desirous of arranging and settling my worldly affairs and thereby be better prepared to leave this world when it shall please almighty God to call me hence, do therefore make and publish my Last Will and Testament in manner thence following, that is to say. 1st I commend my Soul to God, and my Body to the earth to be decently buried after life is expired, and after my funeral expenses and debts are paid, I devise and bequeath as follows by: I give and bequeath to my three sons (namely) Michael, Henry, William, my Estate what ever may be in my possesion or belonging to me after my debts are paid excepting and saving the following by Four Hundred and twenty dollars to the ? of my heirs, residing in the state Of Pennsylvania to be paid as follows by One Hundred Dollars to my daughter Rebecca now the wife of Joseph Burger, to be paid in one year after my decease also One Hundred Dollars to my daughter Catherine (now the wife of David Porch) to be paid in two years after my decease, also One Hundred dollars to my daughter Rebecca now the wife of Joseph Burger to be paid in three years after my decease, also One Hundred dollars to my daughter Catherine, now the wife of David Porch, to be paid in four years after my decease, making in all two hundred dollars to each of my daughters above mentioned, and further I do give and bequeath unto my two grand children, namely) John Piper and Elyu? Piper the sum of ten dollars each, to be paid in five years after my decease, and it is futher my will and meaning, that if my son William should die leaving no lawfull heirs, that his share of my Estate or legacy shall be divided equally between my two sons Henry and Michael. And it is my further will and meaning that five of my heirs (namely) Michael, Henry, William, Rebecca and Catherine shall appropriate the sum of Eight dollars each to procure Tombstones to be erected at the Graves of my deceased wife and children, said Grave stones to be in a plain style. And further it is my will and meaning that my constituted Executors is to take special care of my son William, and see that he is educated as far as natural shelters will amount of and also see to his clothing and personal property. And lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint my two sons Michael and Henry to be sole Executors of my Estate after my decease, revoking and annulling all former wills heretofore by me made, ratifying and confirming this and none other to be my Last Will and Testament. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this nineteenth day of May In the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Forty Nine.
