Elected to the state assembly in 1852 for the eastern district of Chautauqua Co, NY as a democrat. Elected again in 1856, '58, '62, and '64 as a National Republican. He was subsequently elected Governor of New York in 1864 for the Union party and re-elected in 1866. Candidate for Republican nomination for Vice-President, 1868; U.S. Senator from New York, 1869-75.
