Misc. Notes
MARY ELIZABETH YOUNG - a.k.a. Mamie Samuels/May Samuels.
1880 census lists her as Mary E. Yong (4), b. NY (father Ireland, mother NY) as the granddaughter of John and Mary Young. She is apparently the Mamie Samuels (b. Jan 1877 in NY, parents from Ireland) listed as a niece living with Wm & Elizabeth Samuels in 1900 and is almost certainly the person subsequently called May who lived her entire life with the family. Bud Hauser thinks she was the niece of Elizabeth on the Young side of the family. This correlates with the 1880 census record for Elizabeth's parents in Landis Twp, Cumberland Co, NJ. It shows a granddaughter Mary E. Young 4, b. NY (father Ireland, mother NY). She was listed as Mae in 1910, and May in 1920 and later documents. Never married. Her 1920 census listing is May J. Samuels. She lived most of her adult life with "her parents", and is buried with them. Listed in some of the later SF City Directories (40's - 50's).
She apparently looked much different (smaller, thinner) than the Samuels sisters, and was not included in "family" matters. She died at St. Francis Memorial Hospital, 900 Hyde St, San Francisco of pneumonia on 7 Feb 1953. She was living at 243 Clinton Park at the time. Death Cert lists her as Mary Elizabeth Samuels, with a birth date of 6 Jan 1880. She was buried at Cypress Lawn Memorial Cem, Colma, CA on Feb 10th. Her death information was supplied by Mrs. Mildred Gallagher.
