Possibly listed incorrectly in the 1900 census as John English, b. Jun 1892 in Illinois; along with brother James and twin sisters Edna and Marie. It says that 4 of the 5 children were still living.
In 1910, the family is listed at 93 Twelfth Street in San Francisco. Again they are listed with 4 of their 5 children living, where the oldest is 17 year old daughter Zella G. English, who is working as a cashier in a Dept Store.
She got a marriage license with John F. Leroy in July 1911.
The Friday, May 12, 1916 issue of The Recorder, pg 10 lists a suit she filed against her husband, listed as John Prager, aka John F. Leroy and lists her with both surnames as well. This apparently lead to their divorce.
In 1920, a census listing on N. First St in San Jose, CA for Zella G. Prager, age 26, born in IL and divorced; living as a lodger with the White family while working in the Theatre. She handled the wardrobe duties for the dance troupe of her sisters Edna and Marie.
Then listed in the 1930 Alameda, CA census as Zella G. Prager (38 IL) head of household and divorced with her son Gerald R. Prager (15 CA) and James W. English (36 IL) her brother. They were living on Park St. and she is working as a dressmaker in a costumer shop.
Listed alone and doing sewing (47, IL) and divorced in 1940 and 1950.
She is listed as being in Santa Ana, CA in her mother’s 1974 obituary.
Zella Geraldine Prager (b. 06/14/1892 IL) is listed in the Calif Death index as having parents English & Powers, died 06/22/1983 in Alameda Co, CA.
