Richard was born in Welby, Lincolnshire in 1832 (?), the son of Thomas and Elizabeth and one of 15 children. He emigrated to the US in 1861 and settled in Wisconsin. He served as a Private in the Civil War with the 19th Wisconsin Infantry regiment of the Union Army. Richard and Eliza married in 1868. They had two children - Charles 1869 and Alice 1876.
