Humphrey was born in Fayette City, the son of William Dotson and Mary Jane McCune. His 1st wife Agnes Hindmarsh died before 1930. They had four children. John W., Helen, Sarah Elizabeth and Robert M. Nutt. He married Hallie Kisner in 1932, who survives.
