[Obituary]
Maxine M. Sumners, age 90, of Wabaunsee, died December 24, 2011 at the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan, Kansas.
Maxine was born on September 29, 1921 in Wabaunsee, the daughter of John and Vernie (Welch) Bowman. She lived in the Wabaunsee/Manhattan/Wamego areas. She attended grade school in Wabaunsee and graduated from Wamego High School.
On November 5, 1939, Maxine was united in marriage to Allan W. Sumners by Rev. James A. Leach at the Methodist Parsonage in Manhattan, Kansas. Maxine spent many years of her life as a homemaker. In addition to raising her family, she was active in the local 4-H Clubs where she enjoyed sharing her cooking talents by serving as a leader. She was a member of the Wabaunsee Willing Workers Ladies organization of the Beecher Bible and Rifle Church.
Maxine was a member of the Beecher Bible and Rifle Church in Wabaunsee. At her home in Wabaunsee, she took pleasure in harvesting and preserving the produce from the garden, crocheting and cooking for family, neighbors and friends. Maxine thoroughly enjoyed playing cards and as her family and friends can attest to as she was hard to beat. It would be difficult to determine when she was the happiest - playing with or showing pictures of her great-grandchildren.
Maxine was preceded in death by a sister: Dorothy Burgess and a brother: Clyde Bowman. She was also preceded by her husband: Allan and a son: Ronald J. Sumners.
She is survived by Ronald's four children: Robyn Michelle Sumners and her husband Chad Bell of North Hollywood, CA, Nathan and Jacob Sumners of Manhattan, KS and Seth Sumners of Wichita, KS. She is also survived by two sons: John William of Wabaunsee and Robert Dean and his wife Frankie of Westmoreland, KS and their children: John Quinten and his wife Crystal of Omaha, NE, Megan Renee Kimzey and her husband Brian of Kansas City, MO and Robert Allan Sumners and his wife Danielle of Manhattan, KS. In addition, she is survived by four great-grandchildren: Jaden William Sumners, Quinten Josiah Sumners, Avara Louise Sumners of Omaha, NE and a step great-granddaughter: Hope Kimzey of Kansas City, MO.
Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 29, 2011 at the Beecher Bible and Rifle Church, Wabaunsee, Kansas with Pastor Lynn Roth officiating. Burial will follow in the Wabaunsee Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Thursday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Beecher Bible and Rifle Church of Wabaunsee or to the charity of their choice in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas 66502.
