With their four children - 3 sons and one daughter, they determined in 1687 to come to North America and settle in the Quaker Colony of Pennsylvania. They took passage on THE CHESTER. In mid-Atlantic disease broke out aboard ship and both Matthew and his wife, Margaret, with two of their sons Thomas and Timothy, died and were buried at Sea. The two surviving children, William and Eleanor, were made Wards of the other families (see Records of Orphans Court, Chester Co, PA 16 Jan 1688). Eleanor (d. 1745) was raised by the John Simcocks family, and William became a ward of John Stedman, both Quaker families living near Philadelphia.
