Wells Family - Person Sheet
NameMartha “Polly” Smith
Death1877
Misc. Notes
Daughter of Ephraim Smith and Fila Rhoda Hayward/Howard.
In 1850, she seems to be working with her elder sister, Lois Smith, on a farm in Georgia, VT.
In the same census, there is an Ansel Hill, 8 years old who is living with another farm family in Milton, Chittenden County, VT, which is right next to Georgia. This may be her son Benjamin Ansel Hill, since Martha was widowed and did whatever she had to do to make a living for them.
She is missing from the 1860 census, but son Benjamin is working as a farmhand in Connecticut. As soon as the Civil War broke out, he joined up and served throughout the war, ending as a Lieutenant.
The 1870 Census shows Martha Hill living with her sister, Lois Smith, in Georgia, VT, along with Ansel Hill who is listed a year younger than his actual age.
