H. Simpson Wells was married twice. His first wife was Nannie Abbett, whom he married 20 Mar 1870. In the census that year, she is listed as owning $6400 of land and $500 of personal property; and his brother David is living with them. To them were born five children - William, Minnie, Myrtle, John and Bertie. Myrtle and Bertie died in infancy. Nannie Wells died at the birth of Bertie in 1878. It is interesting to note here that before she died she gave this babe to Mrs. Abbett, the mother of E. Fannie Pyatt who, in a few weeks, became the wife of James W. Wells.
Of the first children, William Wells married Clara A. Hunter, of Columbus, Indiana. Minnie Wells married W. O. Clark, of Bartholomew Co, IN.
His second wife was Alice E. Kennedy of Clay City, IL. To them were born ten children - Edna, Mary, H. Simpson, J. Oscar, Charles C., Frank R., Dannie E. who died at the age of four years, Walter D., Carrie, and J. Kenneth.
Of the children of this second marriage -
Edna married Ralph Kyte. To them was born a daughter, Josephine A.
Mary B. Wells married John Steele of Jonesville, Ind. To them were born two children, Edna and John K.
H. Simpson Wells married Audrey Woods, of Anderson, Ind.
J. Oscar Wells married Dollie Harmon of Peru, Ind. To them were born two sons, the oldest dying in infancy. The younger is Eugene Harmon.
Charles C. Wells married Mattie Bolander of Bartholomew Co, Indiana. To them were born six children - Mildred, Katherine, Vivian, Clara, Charles and Evelyn Marie.
Walter D. Wells married Jo Adams of Elizabethtown, Ind.
Carrie M. Wells married Dr. V. B. Ailstock of Portsmouth, Ohio.
J. Kenneth Wells is a bachelor.
In 1900 he is listed as Simpy H. with his wife of 20 years and the nine living children (of 10) from his second marriage. He owned his home and is listed as a farmer.
H. Simpson Wells was a farmer and trader, well known and loved by all who knew him for his genial disposition. His sons were successful merchants. At his death in March, 1910, there were twelve living children.

H.S. Wells Dead
H.S. Wells, known to his many friends as "Simp", died at his home about four miles southwest of this city, at 3-o'clock this morning. Diabetes was the cause of his death and he had been ill from this disease for some time. The late Mr. Wells was sixty-one years old and had long been a resident of this county. He was a farmer and stock raiser. A great many people knew Mr. Wells and everyone who knew him was his friend. Likewise he was a friend of others. He was always jovial, always had a smile for everybody and in many ways he was a man whose cheerful disposition endeared him to every person he met.
The funeral will be held from the home Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and burial will be at the Mt. Pleasant cemetery.

ALICE E. WELLS PASSES BEYOND
Widow of Simpson Wells Had Lived Here 45 Years
Following more than a year's illness of a complication of diseases, Mrs. Alice E. Wells, 69, widow of Simpson Wells and for 45 years a resident of this city, passed away this morning at 10:30 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. V.B. Ailstock, in the Rost-Meyer building, Fifth and Washington streets. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Methodist church conducted by the Rev. E. Robb Zaring. Burial in Garland Brook cemetery.
Mrs. Wells was a splendid woman, deeply religious, and had scores of friends throughout the county by all of whom she was most highly esteemed. She was regarded as an ideal mother, greatly devoted to her home and family and her death, although not unexpected, came as a severe shock to her children and brought grief and madness to many homes.
Mrs. Wells was born in Vincennes, Ind. January 25, 1858, and spent her girlhood there. Early in life she was united in marriage to Mr. Wells and shortly after their marriage they came to this city to live. Mr. Wells passed away in 1910. For a number of years, Mrs. Wells lived with her son Kenneth Wells in the Pope property at Sixth and Pearl streets, but for the past two years had made her home with her daughters. She was taken ill about 18 months ago and a year ago underwent a surgical operation at the May Bros. hospital at Rochester, Minn. She apparently recovered from her illness and the operation, but later she again was stricken and although everything possible was done to relieve her suffering and restore her to heatlh, all efforts failed and for the past few weeks death had been expected.
Mrs. Wells was a member of the Methodist church and of the various church societies, including the Ladies Aid Society and the Berean Bible class. She was also a member of the Bartholomew county chapter of War Mothers and in each of these organizations was an active and tireless worker as long as her health permitted.
Surviving are eleven children; William Wells, Charles Wells, Kenneth Wells, and Mrs. Ailstock, all of this city; John Wells, Simpson Wells and Frank Wells, of Bedford, Ind.; Mrs. Edna Kyte, south of the city; Mrs. John Seele of Connersville; Oscar Wells of Peru, and Walter Wells, of Texas; twenty grandchildren, three great grandchildren, two sisters; Mrs. Bell Neff of Arizona, Mrs. Bertha Bradford of Indianapolis, and three brothers; Frank Kennedy, of Big Springs, Texas, Fred Kennedy, of St. Louis, and Charles Kennedy of Arkansas.
