STAFF REPORTS
Charles Wells Sr., a former Columbus attorney who helped steer the evolution of the Columbus City Schools system into Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp., died Friday at Silver Oaks Health Campus.
Wells represented the corporations' legal affairs from 1959 to 1988, a period in which the system committed to an expansion program in which many of the school properties now in use were built.
In addition to maintaining a private practice and serving as the school board attorney, Wells also held several other posts in local government.
He began his public career in 1954, when he was elected the Bartholomew County prosecutor. That was two years after he received his doctor of jurisprudence from Indiana University Law School.
He served one term as prosecutor and ran for the Democratic Party's nomination for circuit judge in 1956 but lost to Charles Long.
In 1959 he was appointed attorney for Bartholomew County Plan Commission but resigned in 1962 over a dispute with commission members because of his belief that the commission had not taken any concrete steps to correcting the existing zoning ordinance, which he described as "a very incomplete document."
Two years later he was elected president of Bartholomew County Bar Association.
In 1973 he joined his son Charles Wells Jr., the current attorney for Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp., in forming the family law firm Wells & Wells.
Born in Columbus on Dec. 25, 1919, he was the son of the late Charles C. and Martha Bolander Wells.
He graduated from Columbus High School and received a degree in business at Indiana University in 1942.
Immediately after graduating from college, he entered the Army.
He was wounded during the Leyte invasion in the South Pacific and was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
He resumed his studies upon being discharged but was recalled to active duty during the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years; a son, Charles R. (Debbie) Wells Jr. of Columbus; daughters, Becky (Vito) Laudicina and Teresa (Ken) Cornell, both of Venice, Fla., Belinda (Mike) Rager of Dearborn Heights, Mich., and Pam (Tom) Lego of Columbus; sisters, Clara Embry of Columbus and Evelyn Hardin of Indianapolis; 14 grandchildren, Chuck, Zach and Mackenzie Wells, Kevin DeSpain, Scot Laudicina, Joe, Jennifer and Becca Rager, Ken Barnes, Roger and Carl Cornell, Brittany Hill and Delaney and Madelyn Lego; and six great-grandchildren.
