He served in the Navy during World War I. After a period in the reserves while in college at Monmouth, IL he was called to active duty 10 July 1918, served in Mississippi, was released 20 Dec 1918, and discharged from the reserve on 30 Sept 1921. He then earned a M.A. from Corvallis, Oregon.
Joseph was a master mechanic and taught Industrial Arts in Palo Alto schools from 1921 to 1942. During WWII, he planned to enlist in the Navy. His brother said that he had spent an evening with Joseph and his family, that he seemed to be in the best health he had enjoyed in late years, and that he had applied for readmission to the navy and his papers had all been approved. His physical exams were planned for Saturday, May 2nd; Joe died May 3rd.
