DEATH OF MRS. RUTH SMITH
Passed Away at 2:40 This Morning -Funeral Arrangements
Mrs. Ruth Smith, who suffered a stroke of paralysis about 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon, passed away at 2:40 this morning at her home, 719 Olive Street.
Mrs. Smith was born in Prince Edward, Canada 78 years ago and with her husband and family moved to Cherokee, Iowa in 1869 where they resided until 13 years ago when she with her husband removed to the present home in Carthage.
Of her ten children, who have all grown to manhood and womanhood. Edwin Smith, W. P. and Misses Anna and Ruth are residents of Carthage, the others residing at a distance.
The funeral services conducted by Dr. Jeffrey, will take place from the residence at 2:30 tomorrow, and the remains will be interred in Park Cemetery beside those of her husband who died some four years ago.

His children were born in Canada thru 1858, then in Illinois from 1860 thru 1867. Their grandchildren were all born in Iowa, starting in 1876. He was the first white to settle in Amhearst Twp, near Cherokee, Iowa; homesteading in 1869. He was still living in Amhearst, IA in 1880.

DEATH OF MATHIAS SMITH
Aged and Respected Citizen Passed Away This Morning
Mathias Smith died at 8 o'clock this morning at his home, No 719 Olive Street, after a week's illness of stomach complaint. He was born in Ontario, Canada, 80 years ago, and moved to Carthage in 1891. He was an upright citizen and is greatly mourned by his widow and ten surviving children.
Those who are well known here are: Edwin Smith, W. P. Smith, who lives four miles southwest, Mrs. L. L. Chapman and Misses Anna and Ruth Smith.
The funeral services will be held at the family residence at 4 o'clock tomorrow, with interment in Park Cemetery.
