Charles Leonard emigrated from Morrisburg to the US on the ferryboat ALASKA on Dec. 20, 1884.
He is listed as Leonard, a farmer with his wife of 11 yrs and two children in 1900 Potsdam, NY census. He left his farm on the banks of the St. Lawrence and moved to Waddington where he worked in a butcher shop until he died of a heart attack in 1930. His farm was flooded by the St. Lawrence Seaway.
In the 1910 census he is listed in Waddington with his wife of 21 years, two children and his widowed father.
He applied for U.S. citizenship in 1911 at the age of 43. According to his application, he was of light complexion, 5 ft. 5 inches tall, 160 lbs, with blue eyes and dark brown hair. In answer to specific questions, he asserted that he was neither an anarchist or a polygamist, his allegiance to the King of Great Britain. Two years later he became a U.S. citizen.
After he left the farm, he moved to Waddington, where he worked in a butcher shop until his death of a heart attack in 1930. His farm was later flooded by the St. Lawrence Seaway.

CHARLES LEONARD WELLS DIES AT MADRID
Guy A. Wells, of this village received a message Saturday stating that a brother, C. Leonard Wells, had died very suddenly that morning at his home near Madrid village. He had been suffering from heart trouble and his death is ascribed to this. Mr. Wells went to Madrid on Monday and the funeral was conducted this morning at the home, and at the church in Waddington this afternoon. He was in his 63rd year.
Mr. Wells leaves a widow and one son, Charles Wells, who conducts a farm near the home of his father in Madrid.

His headstone lists him as Leonard C. Wells!
