Listed as Emma, born in 1877 in the 1891 census and later; but was listed as Anna in one record. She is listed as Emma L. in the 1901 census, born 1876.
She was living in Middleton, NY in 1911, when her neice Mamie immigrated to the US.
She is listed in the Jan 1920 ceusus in Poughkeepsie, NY as a Bible Worker (50, CAN) rooming with Charles Hutchins and his wife Florence.
Emma is listed as a missionary (44, CAN) and single when she immigrated at Ogdensburg, NY in Sept 1920. It lists her mother as Mrs. Mary J. Wells of Williamsburg, Ontario. It says she had been in the US from 1910 - 1920 at Poughkeepsie, having last departed the US on 26 July 1920. Her destination was a friend, Dora Peterson at 5 Garden St. And that she didn’t plan to return to Canada, was staying in the US permanently, and was not sure whether she would become a citizen.
She is also listed in the 1920-1922 Poughkeepsie City Directory, at 5 Garden St as a missionary.
By 1925 she and the Peterson family (consisting Dora and her brother Harry’s family) had moved to Newburgh. Emma is listed as a Bible teacher (40, CAN) and an alien in the US for 35 years, boarding with the Peterson’s.
By 1930 she had moved to Newburgh, and is listed as a boarder (52, CAN) with the Petersen family which included sister-in-law Dorothy E. (37, NE), and working as a hydro-veterinary Nurse. It says she first immigrated in 1912, and had submitted first papers for citizenship.
In 1940, Emma L. Wells (63, CAN) is listed as head of household with her partner Dorothy E. Peterson (46, NE) and adopted son William Peterson (16, NY). Emma is listed as single and a Veterinary Nurse who had completed 2 yrs of High School and was naturalized (a citizen), with Dorothy being a Veterinary Assistant.
She is listed in the Newburgh city directories from 1932 thru 1960.
