Helen never married, she was a teacher in Knox County and is listed as such with her mother in the 1930 census. In 1939, at the height of the barn dance craze, Helen went to a barn dance where a fire broke out. As the people ran from the scene Helen was trampled and killed. Hers was the only life lost in that fire. The loss cast a shadow on that whole family.
