SYLVAN BEACH - Wyona M. (Wells) Kropa, 82, of Sylvan Beach, died on Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at Faxton-St. Lukes Healthcare, Utica, following a brief illness.
She was born in Aultsville, Ontario, Canada on July 22, 1927. She was the daughter of Ross and Helen (Durley) Wells.
Wyona graduated from Brasher Falls High School in 1945. Her brother, Graham, brought his friend and co-worker, Arthur Adam Kropa, up to the Wells homestead and introduced him to the family. A romance began and Wyona and Arthur were subsequently married on Feb. 28, 1948, at her parents home in Knapps Station, N.Y.
She and Arthur have lived in Waterville, Whitesboro, Clifton Park, Amsterdam and Verona, N.Y., before settling in Sylvan Beach. Wherever they lived, Wyonas home was always well kept, and filled with love, where neighbors, friends and family were always welcome. She was a loyal, supportive wife, and a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was most happy when her house was filled with company, making sure everyone was well fed and having a great time. Wyona was a great pinochle player. She loved without question and touched the hearts of everyone who knew her.
After her children were grown she began her employment in 1971 where she worked as a Food Service Worker at the Shenendehowa Central Schools. In the 1980s she worked as a production worker in Amsterdam working at Coleco Industries where she helped assemble Cabbage Patch dolls and the Atari Home Computer. After retirement, Wyona and Arthur were dedicated to the support of their grandchildren. They were fixtures at assemblies, concerts, musicals and sporting events at the V.V.S. and Canastota School Districts simply known as Grandpa and Grandma.
Wyona was a member of St. Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rome.
Surviving besides her loving husband of 62 years, Arthur, are: daughter, Marie Breitenbach of Rome; son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Pamela Kropa of Canastota; daughter and son-in-law, Tracey and Jeff Rupe of Sophia, W.Va.; a sister and brother-in-law, Maureen (Wells) and Larry Ziegler of Cross Lake; grandson, Mark Breitenbach and his wife, Katie, and great-grandson, Miles Logan Breitenbach of Cheltenham, England; granddaughter, Mandy Theisen and her husband, Matt, of Boston, Mass; and grandsons, Brian Kropa and his wife, Morgan, and Craig Kropa, all of Canastota; and grandson, Jesse Rupe of Sophia, W.Va.; as well as several nieces and nephews.
