Helen Colwell Lawrence, 83, passed away on Oct. 10, 2014, at the Arizona Pioneers' Home in Prescott, Ariz. She was born on Dec. 8, 1930, in Springfield, Mo., to Merle and Emma (Glasscock) Colwell.
Helen grew up in Kansas, Arizona, California and Oregon. She graduated from Prescott Senior High School in Prescott, Ariz. in 1948. After high school, she attended the University of Arizona in Tucson, Ariz., and Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Ariz., where she received a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Education degrees.
She taught for 25 years in the Alhambra School District in Phoenix, Ariz. She also obtained her private pilot's license, an instrument rating and her commercial pilot's license. She was a Civil Air Patrol officer and assisted with search and rescue missions throughout Arizona. Her other interests included fishing, gardening and reading.
Helen married Charles Elmer (Tod) Lawrence in 1950, in Los Angeles, Calif. They were married for 16 years.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents Merle and Emma Colwell; her sister Donna; and her sister Evelyn.
Helen is survived by her former spouse Tod Lawrence of Cottonwood, Ariz.; her son Rick (Annette) Lawrence of Camp Verde, Ariz.; her daughter Karyn (Kevin) Osterman of Prescott, Ariz.; her sister Alice (Mike) Fortney of Prescott, Ariz.; her grandson Chad Lawrence of Flagstaff, Ariz.; her granddaughter Rachel (Seann) Day of Flagstaff, Ariz.; her grandson Daniel (Angela) Osterman of Phoenix, Ariz.; nine great-grandchildren, Zachariah, Ryan, Tyler, Hunter, Kami, Morgan, Cameron, Kathryn and Jasmine; her nieces and nephews; and other relatives.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2014, at Arizona Pioneers' Home, 300 South McCormick St., Prescott, Ariz.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations be made to the Arizona Pioneers' Home for staff appreciation, 300 South McCormick St., Prescott, AZ 86303. The family wishes to acknowledge the extraordinary care and caring provided by the superb staff of the Arizona Pioneers' Home during her six years in residency. She continued to play and win at bingo until her final days.
