He enlisted in the Ohio National Guard on 26 May 1917 and served in Co E 8 Infantry ONG (Co E 146 Infantry) and was Wounded In Action slightly on 29 Sept 1918 while with the American Expeditionary Forces 15 June 1918 to 9 Jan 1919. He received an Honorable discharge 25 Jan 1919 as a Private at Meuse-Argonne; Defensive Sector and was listed as 5% disabled.
Listed as Harry in 1920, when he was living with the family of brother Harvey in Ohio. He was working in a rubber factory at the time.
By 1930 he moved to Ashland Co, OH and was married. He was farming (38, MD) with wife of 8 yrs Florence Lucile (22 Jun 1900, OH - 14 Mar 1937, OH) and daughter Meriam E. (5 Jun 1928, OH).
