Minnie O. Sivertsen 1903 – 1998
Minnie O. Sivertsen, 94, of Miller, S.D., died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998 at Hand county Memorial Hospital in Miller.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998 at 2:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church I Miller with the Rev. Gary Anderson officiating. Burial was in the G.A.R. Cemetery, Miller.
Minnie Oletta Loken was born Dec. 29, 1903 to Norwegian immigrants Mikkel and Olga (Langehaug) Loken near Pierpont, S.D. She was baptized and confirmed at Bergen Lutheran Church north of Bristol, S.D. She attended school near her home in Lynn Township and high school at Northern Normal, Aberdeen, S.D., going an extra year for her teaching certificate.
She taught rural schools in Day county, third and fourth grades at Miller Elementary from 1930-1934 and later taught in Hand County rural schools at Ohio Township and Corrin School.
On July 13, 1935, she married Fred Sivertsen at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Pierpont. They lived in the Hand County jail sheriff quarters while Fred was Hand County Sheriff until 1939 at which time they moved to a small house in Miller. They later purchased a farm just south of Miller where they lived until Fred's death in 1966. She moved to Miller in 1971.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, active in Sunday School and DVBS teacher, Sunday School superintendent, church treasurer, TLCW and the church quilting group. She was also a member of the Sunshine Birthday Club and Bluegrass Barracks Auxiliary.
Survivors include one son, David (Dee) Sivertsen of Miller; two daughters, Ramona (Jack) Ufen of Miller, Bonnie (Arnold) Johnson of Miller; one brother, Dr. Selmer Loken of St. Paul., Minn.; one sister, Gladys Acker of Fargo, N.D.; ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one granddaughter, five brothers and four sisters.
Active pallbearers were her grandsons, Brad Ufen, Brian Ufen, Darin Johnson, Paul Johnson, Shane Sivertsen and Shannon Sivertsen. Honorary pallbearers were he caregivers, Mary Alice Vaughn, Margaret Ufen, Lenore Ufen, Bern Oldfield, Mardell Ufen, Marge Meriweather, and friend, Clarion Engstrom.
