Capt. William Coulson
Cant. William Coulson died Saturday, November 19 at his residence near Edgecliff, on the Allegheny Valley railroad. Capt. Coulson was the oldest of the brothers who owned the famous Coulson line of steamers plying the upper Missouri some years ago. He had served on the river for 40 years as engineer and captain, and was the originator of the idea of the “doctor’, a mechanical contrivance of great value and now used on all steamers on the western waters. Capt. Coulson was born at Ten Mile, Washington county, June 8, 1817. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. O.L. Page and Mrs. S.M. Reynolds of Avalon, and for sons, William W; Samuel S; Martin M; and John E. Coulson. He also leaves three sisters, Mrs. Mary Price, Mrs. Margaret Evans and Miss Eliza Coulson of Allegheny.
