She attended Dixon High School, then worked as a stenographer for 4 yrs at Dixon State hospital.
She married Walter Bylinowski (27 Jun 1915-10 Jun 1942), son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Bylinowski who lived east of Oregon (IL), and was a pro at the Oregon Country club before entering the United States army November,1940. He had been stationed at Ft. Sheridan before the Japanese invasion of the Philippines, when he was transferred east to await further orders. So she took the train east on 12 Feb 1942 to meet him in Fort Hancock, NJ with plans to marry Corporal Walter Bylinowski on Valentines Day in Highland, NJ. They were married in New York 3 days before he left for Iceland that February.
The ship he was on was torpedoed by an axis submarine off the east coast as he headed home for a furlough on June 10th 1942, and he was one of two bodies initially recovered, having suffocated from oil that poured from the fatally-wounded vessel. Bylinowski was wrapped in a life preserver, and clasped about his neck was a good luck charm his wife had given him the day he sailed for Iceland. The couple had planned a honeymoon on his furlough, and were to formulate plans for her to move to the community near the camp where he would take his officers' training. Members of the family had not learned the location of the camp to which he had been assigned, but he had written them that his transfer papers had been received.
She was (2nd)married to Thomas A. Lawless (1916-27 April 1952) on 2 Mar 1946 in Chicago at Our Lady of Sorrows church on Jackson Blvd (with whom she is buried). Rev. Father Seery performed the high mass, and her aunt Clare Wells attended. (Dixon Telegraph 7 Mar 1946)
They were living at 3050 W. Lexington, Chicago when son Thomas A. Lawless was born 1 July 1947 (Dixon Telegraph 9 Jul 1947). Phyllis worked as personal secretary to the chief purchasing agent at the Dixon State hospital. Thomas was chief clerk at the Illinois State Reformatory in Sheridan, and on 27 April 1952 he was killed in an auto accident near Newark, when Phyllis fell asleep at the wheel. Phyllis was injured and son Timmy suffered a fractured skull, from which he recovered to become a doctor. Her son, Dr. Thomas A. Lawless, later joined the optometry practice with her brother.
