There is a record for his family crossing the border to Fort William, Ontario, Canada on 28 Jun 1912. It is unknown why or when they returned.
In 1920 Stewart (14) is listed in Long Beach with his parents and brother and sister (both married).
James is listed in San Francisco for the 1930 census, as a bookkeeper (24, IA) for an oil company. It says he was divorced after being first married at age 21.
He apparently then married Clara Tait about 1931, as their marriage license is listed in the 25 Oct 1931 San Francisco Examiner.
His next record is the 1940 census for San Francisco, with his wife Clara (32), son James (2) and her parents.
His 1943 WWII draft registration lists him in Baldwin Park, CA, working for CalTex Oil.
He was in India and returned from Mumbai aboard the ship Hoegh Silvercloud to New York CalTex offices on 18 Sep 1944.
His Massachusetts Mason membership card lists his birth and death as well as his Lodge in China in 1948, saying he was in Shanghai and in shipping.
He returned from Shanghai aboard the President Cleveland and arrived in San Francisco on 6 Jul 1948.
Married Ursula Boettcher on 27 June 1952, in Hamburg, Germany.
They returned to the US in 1956, where she obtained her Naturalization papers, and were living in Albany, CA.
His State Department death record in 1958 lists his death in Genova, on the island of Palma de Mallorca, which is part of Spain. His wife was Ursula, and he was buried there. It says his previous US address was in New York.

CLARA BELLE MARSHALL
Mrs. Clara Belle Marshall, 49, 443 North El Camino Real, San Mateo, died Wednesday at Stanford hospital, San Francisco, after a weeks illness.
Surviving are one son, James Stewart Marshall Jr., San Mateo; her mother, Mrs. Maude Down, San Mateo; a sister, Mrs. Belma Ellis, San Mateo, and a brother, Carl M. Tait, Palo Alto.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p. m. Saturday hy the Rev. Harold Cram from Crosby-N. Gray chapel. Inurnment will be private at Alta Mesa Memorial park, Los Altos.
