On 21 July 1859 his house was presented to him in a deed from his parents.
Listed as a lumberman in 1860 census with his parents. Assumed responsibility for the Post Office at Tallmansville in 1860 from his grandfather, Elihu.

He held the office of Surveyor from 1868 until 1897. Listed as surveyor in 1870 and in 1880 as a farmer. The 8 Mar 1900 edition of the Hancock (NY) Herald stated that he had been appointed postmaster.
When he refused to go to war during the Civil War, he was persecuted, ridiculed and insulted until he abandoned his property and left the area in 1880.
A March 24, 1908 news article mentioned that he received severe injuries from a vicious sheep some time before, and was being visited by friends, and that Mrs. Benedict (his sister, Olive) was caring for him. He died at home, a week later.

As a young girl, Mary Jane was taken away from her mother by dissentions within the family. Her mother came after in the courts and it was decreed that she care for little Mary Jane who was about age 10. Her mother had erysipelas and the doctor gave her a dose of medicine which killed her 7 Apr 1848 in Morristown, PA. Her father took Mary Jane to live with John and Mary Holt, who had a daughter, Tacy. There she learned morals and all the industries of the home. At age 15 (1852) her father placed her in Wyoming Seminary. She secured a fine education and met Edwin, whom she married at age 23.
