In 1880 he entered the Wayne Independent established 1878- D&H Bldg - old city hall. His first job was as a paper boy. Listed with wife and daughter in 1900 census. In 1910, he is listed as a foreman in printing office, and both his wife and daughter are listed as typesetters.
He is listed as a printer in 1920, and had Lotta Haynes with them as a housekeeper, along with her daughter. In 1930 their daughter Alice was living with them again at age 41, working as a printer in the newspaper office along with her father.
By 1940 Grant was listed as a foreman for the newspaper at age 74, and the family included his wife Margaret (75), daughter Alice (50) a helper at the newspaper, and his sister-in-law Caroline Kalisch (73) who was doing linotype at the newspaper.
