Listed in 1885 census for Clay Center as Burtie Fenton, age 19 and single (b. KS).
He enlisted in the US Army on 17 Aug 1900 at Ft. Leavenworth, KS as a farmer, age 34 yrs, 10 mos. He was discharged 16 Aug 1903 at the Presidio in California.
First listed in the 1909 Tacoma City Directory as a carpenter living at 7002 S. Union.
Living as Bert with his brother, Charles in Tacoma in 1910, working as a railway Watchman.
Listed in the City Directory for 1911 as a carpenter at 5210 So. Steele; for 1912 and 1914 as a laborer with his wife Lillian; and for 1917 thru 1920 as a blacksmith at the same address with his wife.
Listed in Tacoma in 1920 with his wife plus her daughter and two grandchildren from a previous marriage.
In 1930, he and Lillian are listed together in Tacoma, and it states he was first married at age 45, and her at age 22. He was a laborer at the cemetery at the time.

BURTON FENTON
Burton S Fenton 77 died Saturday at his home 5210 South Steele street. He hod lived In Tacoma 40 years and was a member of the Brown camp S W Veterans. Survivors include his wife Lillian: daughter Mrs Drayton Kelley and brother Charles both of Tacoma; sister Mrs Mabel Windell of California and three grandchildren. Piper's will announce the funeraL
His headstone says he was in the U.S. Hospital Corp.

Daughter of Thaxter W. Shaw and Helen Rawlison, and had a sister Daisy a year younger.
Her mother Helen (1848, OH), was married a third time to Thomas Sturges about 1901, but had only 2 children.
Lillian moved to Tacoma in 1883, and is listed in the 1885 state census, before being married to Alex Conly there in 1886.
She is then listed in the 1889 Pierce County census record as Lillian Conley, born abt 1867 in Michigan.
She is listed in the 1900 Tacoma census as Lillian M. Conley (33, MI) a divorced washing lady, with daughter Barnhardie (Aug 1889, WA) and son Leroy (Feb 1892, WA).
Lillian and her children migrated again, to Texas, where is appears she married John Smith in 1904 as Lillian M. Conly, and her daughter was married in 1906. They then returned to Tacoma before the 1910 census.
She was widowed (33, MI) with last name of Smith and living with her step father, Thomas Sturges and mother in 1910. Also living with them were her daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren. It stated that she had 2 children. Her daughter’s married name was Kelley.
Her daughter Birdie and 2 grandchildren were still living with her (53, MI) in 1920, after her marriage to Burton Fenton.
In 1930 she (63, MI) and Burton lived alone, as they did in 1940.
Her death notice states that she died at her home on 5210 So. Steele St and had been a resident of Tacoma for 68 years. She was a member of Asbury Methodist Church. She was survived by her daughter, Mrs Dreyton Kelley, 3 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
