Misc. Notes
Listed as Charles A. Wells in early records, and as Charles E. Wells in 1910 and 1930 as well as son Robert’s birth record.
Was under the guardianship of S. S. Tuttle from Oct, 1889 until 30 April, 1891 when William M. Koons became his guardian. At the time he had approx $650 in savings. He was listed as 19 in 1891.
He is listed in Mt. Vernon in 1900 as Charles A. Wells (Arp 1872, OH) a machinist, with his wife Cloa (Jul 1873, OH) and daughter Mella G. (Nov 1895, OH).
Listed on Cottage St in Mt Vernon during 1910 census as Charles E. Wells (39, OH) working as a machinist in an Engine Works. He is listed with his wife, daughter and son. They had been married 17 years, and both of their 2 children were living.
The story is that Charles deserted his wife, Chloe, when the youngest child was about two years old (abt 1913). He apparently never divorced Chloe, and she was listed in subsequent census records as widowed.
He is listed as a servant with the family of Elmer Bell in the 1930 census for Wayne Co, Missouri. He is listed as Charles E. Wells, age 59, and was married at age 22 and was a machinist at a machine works.
Kimmel family history says he was killed in a train yard while riding on a freight car. The newspaper article of his death mentions a daughter living in Silva, Missouri (who would have been from an illegitimate marriage). He suffered a fractured skull and broken leg.
