[Obituary]
In loving memory of June Beverly Davey, who passed away on May 11, 2024, at age 91. June was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on January 27, 1933, to Walter and Ruth Zabel. She was the devoted wife of Joe Davey for nearly 71 years, and loving mother of three children. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
June spent her youth in North Dakota; La Junta, Colorado; and Pueblo, Colorado, alongside her sister, Louise, and brothers, Bruce and Glenn. In her senior yearbook, June was described as, “A girl with a sweet disposition, who radiates friendliness wherever she goes.” This characteristic continued throughout her life, and she was well-liked everywhere she went.
In 1951, she graduated from Centennial High School in Pueblo, then completed a 2-year secretarial degree at Colorado A&M in Ft. Collins, Colorado (became CSU in later years). During her first week at college, she was introduced to the love of her life and future husband, Carl J. Davey (Joe), in the college library. One month later, they were going steady. June later wrote that she “fell in love with Joe’s tall handsome look and incredible eyes.” They married on June 6, 1953, and embarked on a new chapter, with Joe having been drafted into the army and stationed at Ft. Riley, Kansas. After Joe’s service in the Army, the couple began their family.
June held various secretarial positions over the years, lastly 19 years at the U.S. Forest Service before retiring in 1995. She was a Girl Scout leader, was involved in many family activities and adventures, and enjoyed playing board games and building jigsaw puzzles. The Davey home was often filled with the delicious aromas of June's cooking.
June greatly loved to hike the mountains of Colorado with her family, and we remember many wonderful (and sometimes long) hikes and camping trips with her in the beautiful Rocky Mountains. There were other family trips that also hold good memories.
June had a lifelong love of music and took an interest in the great composers. She also played the piano beautifully in our home. She had a soft heart for animals, especially housecats Snicker, Minnie and Abby, and also three cats that showed up at the backdoor frequently which she named Peanut, Butter, and Jelly. She loved to people-watch and was friendly to many people that she came across in her day-to-day life and always thought of others. She displayed a good sense of humor throughout her life and was a strong woman who faced every challenge in her life with strength and dignity.
June is survived by her loving husband, Joe Davey, daughter Diana (John) Sims, son Mark (Kristi) Davey, daughter Karen Cody, five grandchildren, two great grandchildren and two on the way, and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service to honor June’s life will be held on May 29, 2024, at 11:30 am, at Aspen Mortuary, in Arvada, Colorado. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Cat Care Society in Lakewood, Colorado.
We are thankful for the love June gave to each of us for so many years, and she will be deeply missed by everyone whose lives she touched. Rest in peace June.
