BELLVILLE: Carl A. Back, 82, of Bellville, died Thursday March 9, 2006 in Winchester Terrace Nursing Home following a long period of failing health.
Born October 12, 1923 in Marion, Ohio, he was the son of Cyrus A. Back and Roszettie (Johnson Hill) Back. He grew up in Mansfield and was graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1942.
Carl served his country in WWII, inducted into the armed service in March 1943. He served with the 145th Tank Wave Battalion going in with the third wave at Omaha Beach on D-Day. He continued his service in France and Belgium until he was discharged in 1945.
He married Frances Greene on November 28, 1945 and has lived in Bellville ever since.
He worked as a draftsman at Ideal Electric, an engineer with Peabody Barnes and then as a salesman at Shoemaker Electric from which he retired in 1988.
Carl was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Bellville for over 60 years, and served the congregation as a deacon and an elder.
Always active in local organizations, he worked with the Boy Scouts of America, was a past president of the Bellville Chamber of Commerce, was a past president of both the Bellville and the Richland County P.T.A.s and served as the curator of the Bellville Historical Society Museum until shortly before his death.
His hobbies included working in his lapidary shop, traveling, raising and showing rabbits and thoroughly enjoying his great grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of over 60 years Frances Back; a son and daughter-in-law Jamie Back and Ruth Wachtel of Bellville; daughter and son-in-law Gayle and Don Snyder of Shiloh; two grandchildren and their spouses Isaac and Jeanette Back of Bellville and Ben and Renee Kunkel of Savannah; six great grandchildren Mason and Trey Back and Brennan, Schuyler, and Lilianna Kunkel, and Tyler Meeghan; brothers and sister-in-law Charles Hill of Inverness, Florida, John and Shirley Back of Galion; and a nephew Charles Murray of Mansfield; plus many other nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his seven half sisters and one half brother.

Frances Marie Back, 86, of Bellville, died Friday evening January 26, 2007 in Winchester Terrace following a long period of failing health. Born March 31, 1920 in Mount Vernon, she was the daughter of Fred and Marie (Spriggins) Greene. She grew up in Mount Vernon and Bellville, and graduated from Bellville High School in 1938.
She married Carl A. Back on November 28, 1945 and had lived in the Bellville area for the last 70 years.
Mrs. Back was a longtime member of the Bellville Presbyterian Church.
She enjoyed children, especially babies, and spent lots of quality time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She leaves her family with many memories of time spent together. Frances also loved animals. Besides many farm animals, plus cats and dogs, she turned numerous wild animals into pets. She and Carl raised pedigree rabbits and showed them successfully for many years. She also loved gardening and the more exotic the plant the better. Frances much preferred the unusual to the ordinary. Mrs. Back also loved to read; hungrily consuming historical novels and mysteries.
She suffered from rheumatoid arthritis for most of her lifetime and handled it with patience and grace.
Frances is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Jamie Back and Ruth Wachtel of Bellville; her daughter and son-in-law Gayle and Don Snyder of Shiloh; grandchildren and their spouses Isaac and Jeanette Back of Bellville and Ben and Renee Kunkel of Savannah; great grandchildren Mason and Trey Back, Tyler Meehan, and Brennan, Schuyler and Lilianna Kunkel; and a sister Jan Greene of Cedar Edge, CO. She was preceded in death by her husband of over 60 years, just last March.
