Samuel I. Smith, of West Long Branch, died last Thursday morning from consumption, aged about forty-five years. Mr. Smith had been sick for nearly a year, but had only been confined to his bed about three weeks. His death was probably hastened by starvation. His throat was so greatly diseased by his illness that his victuals on their passage to his stomach entered his windpipe, and being afraid of being choked to death, Mr. Smith, for this reason, partook of but little nourishment. For about twelve years, Mr. Smith was sexton of the West Long Branch cemetery, and since his boyhood he had been a member of the First Methodist church. A widow, three sons and three daughters survive him.
