Misc. Notes
Listed with his parents as a farm laborer in 1860.
Served as a Corporal in the Civil War for Co A, 29th New Jersey Regiment in 1862 according to the county history by Ellis.
Married by J. Wilson, pastor of Reformed Church of Long Branch in 1866. He was age 27, she age 23.
Luke Conrow (31) is listed in 1870 as a Hack Driver with his wife Lavinia (27) and daughters Emma (2), and Flora B. (1). In 1880 his is listed with his family of 6 children, including a son Joseph W. that I had not previously included. They were on Morris Ave. in Long Branch, Ocean Twp.
In 1900 his is listed in Long Branch with his wife and all of the children except William, working as a Janitor (60, NJ). Living with them are Garret D. Conrow (28) and Matte E. Woolley (14), whose relationship is not readable.
Obituary from Red Bank Register 26 Apr 1905, pg 9, col 3 says he died "last Wednesday" from apoplexy at age 75. Says he was born in Deal, had 7 children (all living), and served in Civil War with Co F of Third New Jersey volunteers and with Co A of 29th New Jersey regiment. He was janitor of the Long Branch high school from the time it was built until his health failed.
It references both William and Joseph as sons in addition to Lester, Matthias, Frank and Willard. It appears that William was Joseph’s middle name. He was a member of the Grand Army Post of Long Branch and of the Royal Arcanum lodge. A Garrett Conrow was also a pall bearer.
The cemetery listing shows his birth as 27 Sept 1834, but it must be a typo, as all other sources place it in 1839!
All of Luke’s children are buried together in the Old 1st Methodist Cemetery in West Long Branch, Monmouth Co, NJ.
