John S. 'Mt. Vernon John' Gaddis
COSHOCTON - John S. "Mt. Vernon John" Gaddis, 86, of S. Fifth St., died at 6:06 p.m. Monday, May 24, 2004, at Coshocton County Memorial Hospital. Born July 16, 1917, at Bel-Iville, he was the son of the late Sherman Alonzo and Linnie (Swank) Gaddis.
He served as a Staff Sergeant 334th Bomb Squadron in the U.S. Army during World War II from Jan. 22, 1944 to May 6, 1946, with overseas duty in the European Theater. He was an airplane armorer gunner involved in battles in the Rhineland and Central Europe.
He had been employed as a newsstand clerk in Mt. Vernon and had been a bar tender at the Coshocton V.F.W. 1330. He was a life member of the Mt. Vernon Loyal Order of Moose Lodge and held memberships in the American Legion Post 65 and V.F.W. Post 1330 of Coshocton.
Surviving are two sons, Ricki Lee and David of Florida; a sister, Evelyn R. Humbert of Mt. Vernon; and a special friend, Marjorie Eick of Coshocton, In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Lamar Gaddis in 1994 and infant James Gaddis in 1913.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 28, 2004, at Free Funeral Home, 788 S. Second St., with Lloyd Tenney, minister officiating. Interment will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Bellville Cemetery in Bellville.
The Coshocton Veterans Council will conduct military honors Friday at Free Funeral Home.
