According to a letter written by his uncle Benjamin, he enlisted in the 3rd Ohio Regiment and fought in the Perrysville, KY battle.
John, his wife and daughter Mary are listed with his parents in the 1880 census, along with his brother and brother-in-law.
Living in Rocky Fork, OH in 1892 when his father died.
Listed as Morgan Moats (Feb 1843) in 1900 with his wife Isabell (Apr 1845, OH), dau Mary E. (Sept 1878), son James W. (Mar 1881) and dau Nettie J. (Nov 1885). They were married 24 yrs and had 4 children.
Death record lists him as 63 yrs 7 mos 20 days on 4 july 1906, a laborer and lists his parents.
I have a note of a record of J. M. Moats of Co K, 33rd Ohio Volunteers (Civil War), who is buried in Rocky Fork Cem, Mary Ann Twp, Licking Co OH - from Licking Co Gen Soc.

Her parents were Samuel Shaffer and Elizabeth Kidd Shaffer.
Originally had name as Staffer, IGI lists it as Shaffer. In 1880 George W. Shoffer (30) is listed as living with her family and in-laws, apparently her brother.
