He is listed in 1880 as a farm laborer (37, OH), with his second wife Elizabeth and the 3 daughters from his first marriage; Florence (11), Mary J. (9) and Elizabeth (5).
He is in Newark in 1900, with his wife of 3 yrs Luthamia (39, OH) and Lidia (25), as well as sons Thomas Ralph (12, OH) and Willard Curtis (6, OH). She said that 3 of her 4 children were living, and they also have Grace Smith (14, OH) living with them and listed as a daughter.
Still in Newark in 1910 and he is retired (66), with his wife Luthamia, and children Lydia and Willard. It states that this is his 4th marriage and that he was first married at age 24. Apparently it was only his 3rd marriage.
In John W. Painter’s Civil War pension record, Levi Frenier signed an affidavit stating he had "known John W. Painter shortly after his first marriage to Martha Jane Wood and knew she died about 25 May 1875 and that John W. Painter married Elizabeth Moats, a sister-in-law of mine, on or about 19 Aug 1875, who died 8 Nov 1896. About 12 June 1897 he married Luthamia Smith, a widow, whom he lived with until the date of his decease"

John W. Painter
John W. Painter, and old veteran aged 73 years and 8 months, died at his home northwest of the city early this morning. He is survived by his widow, two sons and three daughters. Mr. Painter was a member of Co. A, 76th Ohio, and served over three years, having a most excellent military record. The funeral will take place from the home Thursday morning at 10 o'clock and will be in charge of the veterans.
